How to make decisions faster as a founder

Founder decision speed gets romanticized as instinct. In practice, the people who move quickly usually have a boring filter: which decisions are reversible, which aren't, and which ones they've already made three times without admitting it.

A boring filter for speed

One-way doors versus two-way doors

Jeff Bezos's one-way vs two-way door framing is useful here because it lowers the emotional stakes on most calls. If you can undo it cheaply, waiting for perfect information is often more expensive than a clean trial. If you can't undo it, equity, a public commitment, firing someone, then slowing down is the skill. Mixing the two categories is how calendars fill with "alignment meetings" about button colors.

Pattern memory versus more data

The other accelerator is pattern memory. A lot of "I need more data" is actually "I've been here before and I didn't like how it felt last time." Writing the decision down with the constraint attached, deadline, bet size, what would change my mind, makes it harder to pretend the delay is diligence when it's avoidance.
