Founder burnout signs
If this is the loop you're in, start here: Reflection to action.
Founder burnout rarely announces itself as burnout. It shows up as shorter patience in standup, a Sunday dread that starts on Thursday, or a week where every decision feels equally heavy. From the inside it still looks like commitment. From a distance it looks like the company is running on a narrowing set of coping strategies.
How burnout shows up before the label
Exhaustion, cynicism, and efficacy
The research definition usually includes exhaustion, cynicism or detachment, and a drop in sense of efficacy. In founder life those map onto concrete tells: you stop reading the metrics you used to obsess over; you fantasize about quitting in language that isn't joke-shaped anymore; you delay calls that used to be easy because you don't trust your own judgment that day.
Decision quality as a tell
Sleep and irritability get mentioned a lot. Equally important is decision quality. When burnout climbs, people either freeze (everything needs one more opinion) or swing (ship something reckless just to feel movement). Both show up in journals as a change in tone, more absolute language, more contempt for customers or teammates, more entries that end without a next step.
Treating tone shifts as data
Catching it early means treating those tone shifts as data, not as personality. One bitter entry is a bad day. A month of entries that sound like the same person disappearing from their own life is a pattern worth interrupting with rest, boundaries, or help, including professional help when it's heavier than an app should hold.
Interrupting the load, not optimizing it
Pausa can flag the repetition: the third week of "I can't think straight" written in different clothes. Use that as a signal to change the load, not as another productivity problem to optimize. Reflection to action only works if there's still enough of you left to act.
